Air Navigation Section

A regulation on the certification of air navigation services entered into force in 2006 (regulation no. 535/2006). The regulation was based on a European Union regulation on air navigation in the Single European Sky (SES). The regulation sets requirements for air navigation service providers, and the Air Navigation Section has the role of ensuring that service providers comply with the requirements of the regulation. The Section issues certificates and conducts oversight of certified service providers, including certified air traffic service training providers according to a new regulation on licencing of air traffic controllers.
The Section handles the organisation of Icelandic airspace, authorisations for, for example, meteorological measurements, as well as advice in the fields which the Section operates in.

The main tasks of the Section are the following:
  • Administration and participation in the setting of regulations.
  • Granting of certificates to air navigation service providers, including training providers.
  • Oversight of air navigation services in Iceland.
  • Taking a position on proposals of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board and following up on proposals.
  • Participating in EUROCONTROL committees and Scandinavian collaboration in this field, as well as collaboration within the NAT area of ICAO.
  • Coordinating rules and preparing proposals for rules regarding air navigation services.
