How to obtain Icelandic JAR-FCL licence

Basic requirements for the issue of Icelandic JAR-FCL licence
  • To get an Icelandic JAR-FCL licence student pilots can attend an approved theory and flight training course in an Icelandic flight school. Having accomplished the theory course and the training and passed all the relevant JAR-FCL theory examinations and skill test they can apply for a JAR-FCL licence. They also need a relevant JAR-FCL Medical Certificate.
  • Pilots who are holding a valid and current national CPL (and IR) issued in accordance with ICAO by a non-JAA state can have the licence converted to an Icelandic JAR-FCL licence if they meet all the requirements of JAR-FCL . They can have the number of lessons and the training hours reduced depending on recommendation from an appropriate training organization approved by the Icelandic CAA (ref. JAR-FCL 1.016 (a)). The Icelandic CAA shall be notified before reduced training is started (fcl@caa.is).

Change of state of licence issue (JAR-FCL licences)
  • Pilots holding a JAR-FCL licence issued by another JAA member state can exercise the licence privileges in aeroplanes registered in Iceland. They can also have the foreign JAR-FCL licence replaced with an Icelandic JAR-FCL licence if they are living in Iceland for at least 185 days a year or employed by an Icelandic Operator.
    See JAR-FCL 1.065 (d) and 1.070.

Conversion of ATPL issued by a non-JAA state
  • Pilots who are holding a valid and current national ATPL issued in accordance with ICAO by a non-JAA state who are either living in Iceland or employed by an Icelandic operator having at least 1500 hrs flight time in multi-pilot aeroplanes  and a valid multi-pilot type rating can be exempted from approved training. They must pass all JAA theory examinations (14 papers) and the skill test for the licence. This is in accordance with JAR-FCL 1.016. The skill test is normally monitored by an ICAA inspector.

Conversion of PPL issued by a non-JAA state
  • Holders of foreign national ICAO PPLs having not less than 100 pilot hours in aeroplanes must, for conversion to JAR-FCL licence, pass the skill test and pass theory examinations in Air Law and Regulations and Human Performance. They must fulfill the requirements for class- or type ratings. See appendix 2 to JAR-FCL 1.015
