How do I travel with liquid which is purchased after security check and on board an airplane?

Passengers can still purchase all liquids and other products in the waiting area of aerodromes within the European Economic Area, as products sold in that area have been specially inspected. If you are flying directly to your destination from Iceland, you can keep all liquid purchased in the waiting area in your hand baggage.

If you are taking a connecting flight, then thoroughly familiarise yourself with the following rules:

Flight from Iceland to states within the European Economic Area with a connecting flight.

  • Liquid which you purchase in a shop after going through security check or on board an airplane registered in a state within the European Economic Area shall be contained in a bag sealed by the shop where you bought the product until you reach your destination.
  • When you go through security check in the country where you take the connecting flight, you must present a receipt at the security gate if requested to do so. The receipt should confirm the contents of the bag and that the contents were purchased that day.
  • In those instances when passengers retrieve checked-in baggage before continuing to a connecting flight, or when baggage has not been checked in all the way through to the final destination, it is best to pack the products in baggage which will be checked in.

Flight from Iceland to North-America (United States/Canada) with a connecting flight.

  • Liquid which you buy in a store after you have gone through security check or that you buy on board the aircraft must be packed in checked-in baggage before you continue on to your connecting flight.
  • You have an opportunity to do this after you have gone through customs when arriving at the aerodrome in North-America (United States/Canada).

Flight to Iceland from North America (United States/Canada) and other states outside the European Economic Area.

  • Liquid which is bought before a passenger checks in shall be packed in checked-in baggage.
  • Liquid bought by passengers after they have gone through security check in North-America (United States/Canada) and other states outside the European Economic Area may not be carried in hand baggage into an aerodrome in Iceland even though it is in a sealed container.
  • Liquid which is bought on board an airplane registered in a state within the European Economic Area may be brought into an aerodrome in Iceland if the product is in a sealed bag. Passengers also need to be able to present a receipt confirming the contents of the bag and the date of purchase if security guards ask for this information.

Note that if liquid has been placed in a sealed bag by the store in question, the seal may not be broken while the passenger is inside the aerodrome or on board the airplane. If a passenger goes through security check prior to leaving the aerodrome and the seal of the bag has been broken, the passenger is not allowed to carry the liquid through security check.
